Throwing Rocks
Throwing Rocks
Suffering at the bottom
of the Maslow pile.
Smooth stone hurling
through air, striking.
Tonight, there is food.
Braced against driving
wind, cold rain icing skin.
Straining back, heaving
boulders upon the wall.
Sheltering from the sky.
Unable to articulate
confused yearnings.
Too young, immature.
Small pebbles thrown
for attentions desired.
Secure behind thick
barricade of rock.
sudden flurry of stones.
Approaching enemy
flees, battered, bloodied.
Smooth, polished marble
hoisted carefully, positioned.
Recognition of deeds done.
Monuments of remembrance,
vanity, honor, celebration.
Flesh has ended its journey.
Still there are stones to move,
stack, toss to the top of the
pile. A burial mound, covering
a life made from throwing rocks.
